Join me in telling Japanese housing and condominium companies to stop buying the wood products that are driving the destruction of Sarawak’s forests
We call on Japanese housing and condominium construction companies and those in the supply chain from Sarawak to take urgent steps to address the destruction of Sarawak’s forests. In light of the Markets For Change and JATAN report ‘Forest to Floor’, on how Japanese housing and condominium construction companies are driving the destruction of Sarawak’s forests by buying timber products from Sarawak, we call on Japanese companies to take urgent steps to address this. Specifically, companies should:
- Assess their supply chain and identify timber products that originate in Sarawak
- Immediately stop procuring timber products from Sarawak
- Commit to not purchasing timber products from Sarawak until they can be independently verified as legal, sustainable and free of corruption and human rights violations.
No timber products originating in Sarawak currently satisfy these criteria. It is not possible for these criteria to be met in the foreseeable future as such improvements are not currently under consideration.
